Fairing East: A Motorcycle Trip Across America

this can only end well…

Bikes Acquired! Two Wings in Three Hours

It’s a crisp, sunny morning here in beautiful Seattle, and we are getting ready for a day of playing tourist in this caffeine-soaked city.  Many thanks to Caitlin for picking us up at the airport, hosting us, driving us to get bikes, and showing us around her adopted home!  So far we are off to a great start – we completed the first two-thirds of our trip in under 24 hours!  Here is how our first day played out (all times are local for where we happened to be):

4:15 PM (Harrisburg, Pa) -The car is loaded and we are off to the airport.  Flight leaves at 6:00 and we’ve got plenty of time to cruise through sleepy HIA.

4:20 PM (Harrisburg, Pa) – TRAFFIC! Should have left earlier! Nope, we’ll be good

4:50 PM (Harrisburg, Pa) – arrive in plenty of time, snap a picture, say goodbye to the lovely Rachel, and off we go!

5:00 PM (Harrisburg, Pa) – Turns out motorcycle tools are not permitted in carry-ons.  Checked baggage it is.

6:30 PM (Chicago, Il) – Made it to O’Hare!  Reminisce about the hilarious trip to Las Vegas.  Flight is delayed, as usual.  Belly up to the airport bar and wait it out with Goose Island brews.

12:15 AM (Seattle, Wa) – SEATAC, baby.  Caitlin is kind enough to pick us up at the airport.

2:30 AM (Queen Anne, Seattle, Wa) – After a few beers, crash and get in a few hours of much-needed rest.  Its important to note that Adam has not slept in over 36 hours at this point.

7:00 AM (Queen Anne, Seattle, Wa) – Coffee, unpacking, making calls.  Head out to see the first bike.

9:30 AM (Bellevue, Wa) – Meet the first seller at the Marina. It’s a white 1983 Goldwing (same age as Adam!).  Adam takes the bike for a spin while Kyle & Caitlin walk out on the pier to scope out Lake Washington.

10:30 AM (Bellevue, Wa) – Adam buys the bike!  Looking sharp, and can totally pass as a cop bike.

11:00 AM (Renton, Wa) – Meet the second seller & his wife.  Its a black & gold 1978 ‘Wing  Seller knows a heck of a lot about Goldwings, and is kind enough to show us around the bikes.  Kyle & Adam take it for a test drive.  It’s a beautiful vintage bike, with all kinds of bells & whistles.  Kyle strikes a deal and we officially have wheels.  Seller takes off the lucky bell.

11:30 AM (Renton, Wa) – Kyle buys riding gloves at the Harley dealer.  Adam buys Kyle a replacement lucky bell.

12:00 PM (Renton, Wa) – Fully insured, titles signed over, and ready to complete Step #3 – ride them home.

What a day!

We spent the rest of the afternoon cruising around Seattle, navigating traffic, hills, and construction.  At about 6:00 we realized we hadn’t eaten anything since the night before (apparently the excitement of buying motorcycles trumps hunger) and found a phenomenal tamale joint inside a converted bus on Rainier Ave.

Kirk gives us the official thumbs up!
